Model Animals

Model animals for farms, zoos or circuses were always a part of childhood for me. Most toy shops had model sheep, cows, crocodiles or was it an aligator, giraffes, elephants, monkeys, pelicans and so on. Everyone needed a lion as he was king and nobody wanted the pigs and there was always one model that had a pig with piglets attached!

A farmer or zoo keeper just about completed the set. I remember one of the hand-me-downs from my cousin consisted of plastic green zoo fencing that locked together and enabled several enclosures to be made, essential for any 1970s zoo and it made an ideal setting for a lion escape for the nearby lego built city!

Most models I had were made by a model company called Britains. Britians Farm Toy collection included a wide range of Farm toys; toy tractors, implements, combine harvesters, Land Rovers, farm people, farmyard animals, farm sets and farm buildings. William Britain toy farm animals range and Britain toy tractors are amongst the most popular range of farm toys today.

Britains Limited was founded by William Britian, a toy maker from the West Midlands, England. Some 70 years later in 1997, Britains was brought by the ERTL, an American based Toy Corporation who have continue to develop the Britains brand name and will continue to do so for the years to come.

Did you have any models you were fond of or memories you would like to share? We would love to hear from you.

I was given a model farm when I was eight (in my 40's now) and I still have most of it. I don't know what happened to the barn, but I still have the original animals and people plus all the bits (mainly Britains) that I used to buy when my dad took me in to Norwich on a Saturday. We went into Langleys toy shop and I would carefully choose my newest piece. As a horse-aholic, my farm came to have more horses than any commercial farm could ever support! They all live in a shoebox on top of the wardrobe and come out to play with visiting children, who love it.

Sounds a lovely thing to have kept from your childhood

I grew up in Norwich and used to love Langleys! That was always a bit of luxury because it was in the City. We would usually go to Kerrisons at the boundary instead. Every Saturday morning when our dad picked us up, that's where we headed to with our pocket money (usually just under £1. This WAS the early 80's).

When I'm back visiting family, I like to pop into Langleys to see if there is anything I can buy for my kids :)
